Zirakpur: New Lifeline Superspeciality
Hospital was inaugurated
here today along with the launch of Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)
facility. The facility was launched by Dr Muneesh Goel (MCh, CTVS).
In his inaugural speech, Dr Praveer Goel, Managing Director, New Lifeline
Superspeciality Hospital
said, “ECMO is the ultimate life saving therapy in the world today available at
very high end selected centers worldwide. This is a form of extra corpeal life
support, where an external artificial circulator carries venous blood from the
patient to a gas exchange device (Oxygenator) where blood is enriched with
Oxygen and its Carbon Dioxide gets removed. This blood then re-enters the
patient’s blood circulation.”
While addressing the media, Dr Rachit Duggal, MD – Anaesthesia
said, “ECMO is truly the new standard of care in any critical care setting. It
provides chances of survival in cases of heart failure, lung failure where
patient would have otherwise certainly died in absence of ECMO support. It is
suitable for the patients who are hypoxaemic despite maximal conventional
ventilatory support, have significant ventilator-induced lung injury, are in
cardiogenic shock or who are in respiratory failure. The basic premise is that
ECMO will allow the level of ventilatory support to be reduced, which allows
time for recovery from the underlying pathology and recovery from
ventilator-induced lung injury to occur.”
